Lawrope Strengthens Presence and Activities in China
( AGM Abogados, Spain)

Lawrope is becoming more and more active in China. Two of its members, Hoche Demolin Brulard Barthelemy from Belgium and AGM Abogados from Spain are now collaborating in order to position Lawrope in the country. A licensed Chinese lawyer works now in the Brussels office. This new incorporation is helping the two firms to manage activities and operations with China and will contribute to better assess both teams on issues related to franchising in China, company creation, contracts, marketing and more.

AGM Abogados Participates in the II Spain-China Business Summit in Beijing

A delegation of AGM Abogados travelled to Beijing to assist to the II Spain-China Business Summit which was presided by the King of Spain. AGM joined an important Spanish delegation counting more than 200 companies, one of the largest seen in recent years. The Summit which officially started on June 26 brought together representatives of different business organization, companies and financial institutions, that shared a local presence and/or interest in the region.

A group of Chinese entrepreneurs from Central China also came to meet with the Spanish delegation. In fact, Central China presents several collaboration opportunities in the technological and industrial sectors. AGM Abogados which has a representation office in Shaanxi Province, strongly supported the initiative aiming at promoting Spanish investment in that region.

AGM in that sense was the first Spanish legal and financial consulting firm to open a representation office in the city of Xi'an.

As a first example of AGM's involvement are the different seminars organized by the firm. Last May, AGM participated, in collaboration with Foment del Treball and HSBC Private Bank, in a seminar on investment opportunities in Central China. Mr. Francisco Lacasa, Founding Partner and Director of AGM's Corporate Finance Department, was one of the main speakers of the event.

Parallel to this, last March, a team of AGM Abogados realized the fourth commercial trip of the firm to the province of Shaanxi, but this time, with very clear objectives allowing the firm to pass to the next level in the development of business with China. In fact, this time, clients were accompanying the team in order to conclude agreements with local partners and/or participate in specific investment projects. The long and hard prospecting work was finally showing results that are concrete and measurable.

AGM's team knows that competition in China is fierce, but the firm has reached a privileged position thanks to its representation office in the city of Xi'an, Shaanxi. Moreover, AGM benefits from a large network of key local contacts allowing the firm to offer extra value and security to its clients.

Hoche Accompanies the Prince and around 1200 Belgian Businessmen.

Following a new promotion strategy and action plan for the development of business with China, Hoche participated in a special commercial trip with an official delegation presided by the Prince Philippe of Belgium and around 1200 Belgian businessmen.

Going from Beijing to Shanghai and passing through Shengyang and Hong Kong, the delegation met with 15 law firms, 6 investment companies, 20 clients willing to invest in Europe, as well as around 15 important economic and financial entities. Following these gatherings the team has concluded that the legal market in China had experienced significant changes, and that structures similar to those of the west were now really being put in place and implemented .

On one side, Chinese companies will start, in the coming 2 to 3 years, a gradual entry of the European market. These new developments will require the assistance of European lawyers. To give only some examples Hoche's team had the chance to meet with the representatives of important investments companies willing to introduce Chinese companies in Europe's stock exchange or event to invest their reserves in Europe. Others have also expressed the wish to acquire European businesses in order to have a better control on their distribution chain.

On the other side, China's administration is taking measures in order to push forward the development of central provinces, leaving out the coasts which have already reached full development and which market is becoming more and more saturated. Central provinces have in fact a high potential which still remains unexploited both in terms of European companies willing to develop activities or business in the region or in terms of European law firm presence. In fact, the team was surprised by the warm welcome they received and by the high potential that they discovered in Shenyang, and they expect that cities such as Xi'an and Chengdu would offer a similar scenario.

Also, the number of Chinese law firms has been increasing significantly, not only in size but levels including in ‘‘commercial'' terms since they now maintain a true capacity to refer cases.

Of course it is necessary to count on the help and presence of a Chinese lawyer, or a lawyer who knows the language, often because the level of English of clients and collaborators is not sufficient.

Real marketing actions and a well prepared plan of action are then susceptible to give results on a short to medium term basis. For the moment it is planned that Mr. Pierre Demolin should be travelling to China next September, and that an economic newspaper will be publishing one of the firm's articles. It is also planned that a joint seminar be organized with AGM Law firm in Brussels and Madrid or Barcelona, seminar to which important members of the Chinese administration as well as Chinese clients would be invited. The firm also hopes to be able to organize another seminar in China during the coming year.

In brief, Hoche's team believes that all these initiatives can contribute to position the firm as an essential link between the two markets and will also further promote the name of Lawrope in China and among Chinese investors interested by Europe.
